The dream by S. Morley

Short Story

The dream / S. Morley

Her heart was racing as i ran down the underground passageways. Crystals lighting the way as she hoisted her purple skirts and flew through the corridors. Explosions were still ringing in her ears from the city above her. The militia and the guild of magicians and sorcerers had done a valiant job in keeping the city safe but now they were in the streets mutated demons of foul evil of the most horrible kind , they snaked through alleyways and ripped through the air. The citizens of Avaton mixing with the armed forces, making a last stand.
The power gave her strength as she almost flew through the rooms. Some of them were heaped with junk; other held only a still pedestal with nothing on it. She knew where she had to go though. She only hoped her friend had found it before the demon brethren did.
The thing she was running towards was a item of great powers, a mirror which held the power of dragons. She had given her friend her power as a dragon so he might be able to find it whilst she held up with everyone on land, but it had changed. There was no hope if she could not wield it against them.
She could hear demon dogs behind her as they sprinted towards her. Baying for blood. Without thinking she turned around and shot out fire from her hand, burning them to cinders. An ogre came out of the door ahead of her. He slammed it down where she would of been a second before just as she changed tack , jumping from heap of rubbish to heap of rubbish as she pulled the dagger from her sleeve and sprang on his head with it , spilling blood everywhere. She jumped off and ran on again.
She finally ran down as huge stairway to a room. It was rectangular in shape, and purple crystals gave the dark blue stone a purple coloring. The color of dragon magi.
At the other side was a huge crystal dragon. It wore a huge necklace around its neck. I huge gemstone missing from middle. Her friend was sat in front of it. Facing away from her.
She walked up to him. Cautious, there were no other creatures here, but something seemed... Wrong.
"Hello Acelia , I knew you would come." He slowly stood up and turned around. His face was marred by a scar running from his pointed left ear down to his right chin, it looked new but healed , and then she saw the gem.
One his eyes were a purple , glowing a soft light apart from his green colored left eye. An almost sadness seemed to touch them.
Her eyes went wide. "Maclan what are you doing? Only I am meant to wield the power!"
His face went hard. "You, meant to wield power? You wouldn't know what to do with it. With this i can rule nations." He spat on the ground. "You should of placed your trust on someone else."
Fire sprouted from her fingertips as he leapt back , jumping right up to the high ceiling to come smashing down where she was only a moment ago. She flitted across the grand room. Throwing slicing air blades aimed at his throat.
"Enough!" Tendrils of air lashed her to the ground. He walked over. His face was an icy mask as he looked down on her. He knelt down and touched her cheek. His fingers pressing into her jaw.
He whispered though. "Who would know that a lowly wood elf could be gifted with the power of the one and only remaining dragon magi? I shall fly through the air, destroying Armies and demons alike. And you shall be but a foot note in my legacy." He kissed her lightly upon her cheek as a singled tear rose from her eyes.
"No, Maclan. No." A sudden fright entered his eyes as he found he couldn't draw his lips away from her cheek. She slowly sat up and in put his head in her hands in front of her. Words barely came out of his mouth.
"But you can't know this... You wouldn't do this to a friend... Acelia. Not to someone you love." His eyes look terrified as her fingers held on to his head. Drawing every last scrap of power from his body. Teardrops fell from her cheeks as she held on. His skin became papery and old as the light from his purple eye faded and dimmed. His eyes sank inwards, wrinkles crawling across his face and arms. Finally she dropped him. His lifeless body tossed away from her. The power of the gemstone filled her , and yet she felt filthy. Gross and demonic as the things that slaughtered ahead. She cried and moaned on her knees. She finally got up as she heard demonic howls from the stairway leading to upstairs. She unleashed fire burning even there shadows to cinders. She flew the corridors and rooms and finally burst out of the house which stood above it. A huge purple colored dragon. She threw fire across the armies of demons but silently she wept for her betrayal of a friend.
