The Other Side of the Moon / Guy Reid |

A long time ago the people of the earth celebrated Mother Earth and her bounty every May First. The Moon Goddess highly approved of this practice since she and Mother Earth were such good friends. Now in those ancient days the Moon Goddess shined only in gold on one half of the earth, and only in green on the other half. So one half never knew what the other half looked like. The Moon Goddess decided to help the people of the earth celebrate their tribute to Mother Earth one year and she got a great idea: have them build a May Pole on May 1st, with intertwined cloths made of green and gold to show her appreciation to Mother Earth and acknowledge her respected position in the Galaxy. So the Moon Goddess appealed to the people of the Earth, asking them to build this May Pole using her colors, to which they readily agreed since they, too, felt it was important to show their special gratitude to Mother Earth. Then the trouble began: The people of one half of the earth had never seen the Green side of the Moon and the other half had never seen the Gold side. So they had a big dispute over what color the May Pole should be. “Green!” shouted one half ---------“Gold!” shouted the other. It became such a big argument that they built this big wall around the earth, shouting “Green!” on one side and “Gold!” on the other. When the Moon Goddess returned to witness the May Pole and join the celebration she saw the long, ugly wall instead. “What happened and where is the May Pole”, she asked? Both sides gave their explanations of why they had built the wall instead of a May Pole as the Moon Goddess requested. “Everyone knows you are Green” shouted one side while the other shouted “Everyone knows you are Gold.” as they continued to glare across the wall of rancor at each other. The Moon Goddess sighed. Then she turned around so that both sides could see that she was green on one side and gold on the other. When she did, the people of the earth began to laugh and admitted how foolish they had been. They tore down the wall and built a beautiful May Pole which they intertwined together with green and gold , to celebrate the bountiful goodness of Mother Earth. The Moon Goddess shined her approval and Mother Earth was happy with this special gift from her friend, the Moon Goddess, and her people..
